The Bible tells us little about the life of St. Joseph who became the foster father of Christ and lived as a simple carpenter in the little town of Nazareth in Palestine. He could trace back his ancestry to the royal House of David, but there was nothing left of royal splendor or royal by doing carpentry work.
He was an unimportant citizen of the place, but combined true wisdom and prudence with simplicity and uprightness. The Bible calls him a just man. God spoke to him through an angel in a dream appointing him Foster Father of his son, Jesus Christ who was born of Mary through the Holy Spirit.
St. Joseph readily accepted the great responsibility of looking after Mary and her son. Shortly before the birth of Jesus the had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the town of his ancestor, as the Roman domination. As they found no other place in the overcrowded town, Jesus was born in stable and Joseph in all that poverty provided for Mary and the child as well as he could....
